Series highlights Tahirih’s forced marriage survey and the voices of survivors and community advocates

Tahirih is featured this week in a four-part Al Jazeera America series on forced marriage in the United States.

The series highlights the findings of Tahirih’s National Forced Marriage Survey, which tracked up to 3,000 known and suspected cases of forced marriage from 2009 to 2011 across 47 states.

Tahirih launched the Forced Marriage Initiative in 2011 to foster a comprehensive, national response to the problem of forced marriage in traditional immigrant communities in the United States.

Through the Forced Marriage Initiative, Tahirih hopes to enable and empower women and girls to safely resist or escape forced marriages, and equip service providers, government agencies and community advocates with the resources they need to assist forced marriage victims.
