Tahirih advances to second round of national competition for growth-focused nonprofits

Tahirih has been named a semi-finalist in a national competition that provides resources to nonprofits on a path to growth.

The Social Impact Exchange Business Plan Competition identifies social sector scaling initiatives with demonstrated impact and readiness to scale – and supports them with financial and consulting awards.

The competition helps develop a strong pipeline of scale-ready initiatives and provides them with resources to successfully take the next step.

Tahirih launched an ambitious, strategic growth plan in 2013. It lays the groundwork for Tahirih to grow from three to five offices and more than double the number of women and girls served by 2017.

The Social Impact Exchange Business Plan Competition consists of three rounds, and Tahirih is one of just 14 non-profit finalists that made it to the second round of the competition. In total, 51 entered the competition.

Semi-finalists gain access to array of resources

During the 8-month competition process, entrants develop and submit business plans to scale their “social solutions.”

Tahirih protects courageous immigrant women and girls who refuse to be victims of violence through legal services, advocacy, and education, and elevates the voices of immigrant women in communities, courts, and Congress. But the nonprofit can only assist one in every four women and girls who reach out for help due to limited capacity.

Through expansion, Tahirih aims to increase the number of women and girls it directly serves in courts by 250 percent. Countless women and girls would also be served through expansion of the nonprofit’s national policy efforts.

“We’ll grow because we have to. We can no longer tolerate the suffering of women in the world. We can longer tolerate pervasive inequality. We can no longer tolerate missed opportunities to transform lives and entire communities by not having the capacity to respond,” Tahirih Executive Director and Founder Layli Miller-Muro recently says of Tahirih’s growth plan.

Competition entrants gain access to an array of scaling resources, including access to a website of resources on growth, group trainings, one-on-one consulting, and written feedback on their plans.

Finalists to be announced in May

Judging in the social impact competition is conducted on a pro bono basis by professionals from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.

U.S.-based nonprofits with a focus in education, youth development, health, poverty alleviation, or community economic development are eligible to enter the competition.

The three nonprofits that make it to the final round of the competition will be announced on May 19.

Finalists will present their business plan June 17 at the 2014 Symposium on Scaling Impact in New York City, and an award recipient will be selected that day.
