In a recent interview with the Houston Chronicle, a senior staff attorney for Tahirih Houston discussed how one of the largest backlog of immigration cases in the nation, combined with a shortage of judges, is delaying justice for Tahirih clients.
Her interview appeared in an article published in April.
Samantha Del Bosque and other lawyers in the Houston area said cases pending in front of them have been postponed until at least the fall, “leaving their clients in limbo and unable to continue with their lives, even possibly ruining their chances of being able to stay. Witnesses in difficult asylum cases, for example, can disappear or die. Meanwhile immigrants who should be sent home quickly are allowed to stay for years.”
“We definitely need an extra couple of judges because it’s making things very difficult,” Del Bosque said.
