The Boston Globe highlighted the growing national movement to end child marriage in the United States.
Jeanne Smoot, Tahirih Justice Center’s Senior Counsel on Policy and Strategy, spoke with The Boston Globe about the current state of marriage laws in the United States and how they can often leave children vulnerable to coercion and abuse.
“Incredibly, the state’s minimum marriage age laws enable someone who would otherwise land on a sex offender registry, instead to head for a gift registry. There’s no reason to think someone outside marriage is at risk but isn’t at risk inside the marriage,” Smoot shares.
