ICE released Tahirih client Vilma Carrillo Carrillo on Friday, after detaining her for eight months. Vilma was reunited with her 12 year-old daughter, Yeisvi, who was separated from her during the administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy. Pacific Standard spoke to Tahirih Atlanta Executive Director, Shana Tabak, about Vilma’s case.
“We are ecstatic that Vilma is finally going to be reunited with her daughter after 247 days without her,” said Tabak.
Despite Vilma’s release from detention and her reunification with her daughter, her battle with the immigration system is not yet over. Vilma must now fight the denial of asylum case in court.
“She’s still in the midst of a fight for her life. She faces certain death if she returns,” said Tabak.
