VICE quoted Tahirih Bay Area Executive Director, Morgan Weibel, in an article about the administration’s new steps to eliminate in-person interpreters from immigration courts. Advocates have called this a violation of due process, because of how much more difficult it will become for migrants to navigate immigration court.
“Right now, about 95% of our clients in removal proceedings require interpreters. It’s hard enough for non-lawyers to understand the legal jargon that is used in court settings, so imagine having to do that in a second or third language,” Weibel said.
