In response to ICE unlawfully arresting and detaining Jeanette Vizguerra, a well-known immigration activist and long-time resident of Colorado with three U.S. citizen children, Tahirih Director of Public Policy Casey Carter Swegman said, “I am extremely disturbed by the increasing number of cases we have seen where ICE is brazenly violating the law and simply ‘disappearing’ people into custody without providing cause or due process. The government cannot simply strip someone of their rights because they don’t like what they say and run roughshod over our immigration laws and policies.

Immigrant survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault and other abuse are watching all of this unfold, with ever-increasing fear that if they step forward for help or speak out in any way, they will face punishment and deportation. Survivors bring unparalleled strength, wisdom, and perspective to advocacy—turning their lived experiences into powerful leadership that drives change and uplifts entire communities.”

Tahirih applauds the members of Congress who have called for her release and the advocates fighting tirelessly to defend Ms. Vizguerra’s rights.
