Houston, TX — The Texas Bar Foundation has awarded a $20,000 grant to the Tahirih Justice Center. These funds will help give access to justice for immigrant women and girls in underserved rural regions outside of Houston. The year-long grant from the Texas Bar Foundation will help Tahirih expand a successful, collaborative project with the Fort Bend County Women’s Center to deliver free, holistic, trauma-informed legal services to immigrant survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, child abuse and other crimes in Fort Bend County, Texas.
In Houston, most service providers are based in Harris County; and accessible, low-cost transportation for immigrant survivors outside of Harris County is not widely available. In response, Tahirih has been actively administering effective service delivery models to reach immigrant survivors in under-resourced outlying regions, with a specific focus on dedicating resources to Fort Bend County.
“Now more than ever, grants like this one are vital to our mission,” said Tahirih Houston Executive Director Lubabah Abdullah. “These funds will allow Tahirih to expand its model of free holistic legal and social services to better serve low-income immigrant survivors of gender-based violence in rural areas of Houston as well as bring hope and healing to hundreds of survivors.”
Throughout the Greater Houston region, Tahirih assists women and girls and other immigrant survivors who are seeking justice and protection from extreme forms of violence. The organization leverages both in-house and pro bono attorneys to assist resilient immigrant survivors of gender-based violence through culturally competent direct legal services, social services case management and referrals, and public outreach and education.
Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $25 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably funded bar foundation.
